how movies look
Before Star Wars, special effects were mostly mechanical toys and puppets. The earlier computers were too expensive to be a resource for movie makers. Dennis Muren, a special effects artist, and other people that worked at Industrial Light & Magic were hired to create The Millennium Falcon, The Death Star, and other gadgets or ships in the Star Wars movies. They took the model of the gadgets or ships and instead of the models coming to the camera, the camera came to the models. This would make it look like the model was coming towards you in the movie. Lucas and his team had set a new standard for movie making that everyone copied and built upon.
